3 · Cull your clips and sort them into folders
Create your first folder
For example, you might want to keep a project’s dialogue footage separate from the cutaway shots you’ll use between takes.
- Select one of the cutaway shots.
- Press the unused 1 key.
- The Folders panel opens. Name the new folder Cutaways and press Enter. The clip is added to this folder, the panel closes, and you continue culling.
- When you see another clip for this group, just press 1 to add it to the same folder.
- Select a clip with dialogue and press the unused 2 key.
- This time, name the folder Interviews. You can now quickly add clips to this folder with 2.
The 1–9 keys are folder shortcuts. If you’ve assigned a folder to a number, it adds the selected clip to that folder. Press an unused number to create a new folder.
You can create a folder with a number key only in the main view. Pressing an unused number while video preview is open won’t create a folder. You can close preview or open a folder from the Folders panel.
When you add a clip to a folder in the main view, you move to the next clip while culling. For example, pressing 1 twice in a row in the queued group adds two different clips to the same folder. But if you opened the video in preview, the same clip stays open when you press a number key. This lets you add the clip to other folders too, if you like.
Other ways to create a folder:
- Right-click a clip and choose New folder….
- When you drag a clip, if the folder panel is closed, 1–9 numbered slots appear in the left tool rail. Drop the clip in an empty slot to create a new folder. If the panel is already open, you’ll see Drop here: new folder on the empty row.
- Click the row that says empty in the Folders panel. Merceq asks you to name the folder.
- You can also use + New folder… in the Folders panel.
