3 · Cull your clips and sort them into folders
Get to know the tool rail on the left
The narrow tool rail on the left of the screen has icons for culling, folders, and filters. Click an icon to open its panel; your clips stay where they are on screen. Only one panel can be open at a time. The rail is hidden when your library is empty.
The rail has these tools:
- ▷ and the number of clips in queue below it. The hint is {n} in queue. Click to open the Culling panel.
- Folder icon. The hint is “Folders · N/9”. Click to open the Folders panel.
- Filter icon. The hint is Quick filters. Click to open the Quick filters panel: Clean up · Weed out · Find (Section 5). The number of open filters appears in the corner.
- Six mark icons: Has duplicates, Scenes selected, Has a note, Tagged, Delivered, and Pending deletion. These don’t open a panel; click once to show those clips. Hover to see the name and count ( Tagged · 23). An icon with a count of zero looks dim and can’t be clicked.
- L (all filters).
The Culling panel opens when you click ▷:
- At the top, you’ll see the current clip count and what’s being shown: {n} clips; {n} left if you came from Lens; {n} matching when search is active; {n} selected when a few clips are selected. If there are no clips left in queue, it says ✓ done.
- The colored progress line and %{n} decided below show how much of the library you’ve culled.
- One main button appears, depending on what’s happening on screen:
- start culling: You haven’t started culling; the In queue group opens in Lens.
- continue culling: You left Lens (for example, to use a filter) but there are clips left in the round; you’ll return to where you were.
- Clear selection: A few clips are selected; clears the selection.
- Summary: No clips remain in queue; opens the closing summary (Section 8).
- in flow: Lens is already open; the button can’t be pressed.
- While importing, the bottom row says importing · 12/40; when done, it says 40 clips arrived and Close. If the panel is closed while a task is running, a thin blue line lights below ▷.
When the panel opens, the main button is selected; press Enter to perform its action. Clicking ▷ again does the same thing.
The Folders panel opens from the folder icon. Its position may change depending on the window height, or you may need to scroll inside the panel. We’ll explain how to organize folders below.
You can faintly see your clip images behind the panels.
If you open another panel while a panel or all filters is open, the previous one closes. Click outside the open panel or press Esc to close it. Then you can return to your clips.
While entering a new folder name, the first press of Esc cancels naming and leaves the panel open. The second press closes it. If you close the panel by clicking outside or opening all filters, the unfinished folder name isn’t saved. You can keep using the 1–9 shortcuts after that.
When you create a folder with an unused number key, confirming its name with Enter closes the panel. If you opened the panel yourself and clicked + New folder…, it stays open. When you add a clip to a folder while the panel is closed, a brief notice appears beside the folder icon. It shows the folder’s number, name, and clip count (2 B-roll · 13).
