How background defect scanning works

Merceq automatically scans for some image issues in the background: missed focus moments (including focus hunting at the start of a recording) and shaky sections. You don’t need to turn on a separate switch for this scan.

  • Scanning runs at the lowest priority. When Sense or another demanding task starts, it takes priority.
  • Scanning also waits when you pause Sense, stop a job, cross the battery threshold, import, or reset. It then resumes from the clip where it left off.
  • There isn’t a separate job row for this scan in Machine.
  • Each clip is normally scanned once. If the video’s contents change, it’s scanned again.

Scanning doesn’t run on these clips:

  • Recordings longer than 30 minutes.
  • Clips with no image, an unreadable duration, or no preview that can be created.
  • Files on a disconnected disk, files that can’t be reached, or files in iCloud that haven’t been downloaded to your Mac.

Scanning doesn’t cut or change videos. You’ll see any detected issues as small markers on the timeline in the video preview. Hover over a marker to read the problem interval, for example “0:03–0:05 · shake”. When exporting, you can also carry this information into your editing project with Add defects as markers. For more information, see Chapter 4 — Choose the best moments in a clip and Chapter 8 — Export your selections.
