What does Esc close?

Each press of Esc closes just one layer. The order is:

  1. The shortcuts window or camera window.
  2. If preview is open, in this order: frame mode → open scene (I was pressed, O is pending) → Info or the transcript overlay → full screen → preview itself.
  3. Search results within a clip.
  4. The Duel candidate.
  5. The selection.
  6. The cleanup review (returns to the previous view).
  7. “Another take” or “similar scenes” results (returns to all clips).

Holding Esc doesn’t close multiple layers. Each press takes you back one step.

In an open window (Settings, Export, Duel…), Esc closes that window. If a wing opened from the left rail (Culling, Folders, Quick filters) or all filters is open, the first Esc closes it; focus returns to the grid. While typing a name in the Folders wing, the first Esc discards the name and the second closes the wing.

There’s no left panel, so there are no ⌘\ or ⌥⌘S shortcuts to open or close it. Open wings from the left rail with the mouse; L opens all filters.
