3 · Cull your clips and sort them into folders

Put the same clip in more than one folder

The same shot may be useful in different projects or scenes. You aren’t limited to one folder.

  1. Select the clip and open it in preview with Space.
  2. Add it to the Cutaways folder with 1.
  3. While the same video is open, add it to the Interviews folder too with 2.
  4. Check that both folders are marked in the folders area in preview.

You don’t have to use number keys to add a clip to more than one folder. Open the Add to Folder menu in the main view or preview, or drag the clip onto the folder you want.

Press the same number again to remove the clip from that folder. If you select multiple clips and they’re all in the folder, they’re all removed; if only some are in it, the others are added. Dragging and dropping and the Add to Folder menu only add clips; they don’t remove existing memberships.

You can also put the clip you just watched in a folder. If you’ve moved to another clip in preview and forgot to add the previous video to a folder, use ⇧1–9. This adds or removes the previous clip’s membership in that folder; the clip you’re watching now doesn’t change. If you haven’t passed a clip yet, you’ll see “No previous clip yet; ⇧ + number works on the clip you just passed.” This shortcut doesn’t work in the main clip view.

When you sort clips into folders, source files aren’t moved or copied. When you export, choose the “Your folder” layout to have your videos in the folders they belong to. If a clip is in more than one folder, it appears in each of those folders in the output. We’ll explain how this works in the export section.
