2 · Import your footage

When the transfer finishes

If you chose Copy to disk, then import, the videos are added to the library. If you chose Copy to disk only, they’re copied to your chosen destination folder; you can add that folder to the library later using Import.

When does the window close?

Method When it finishes
Import (in place) The window closes and the Import complete summary opens.
Copy to disk, then import If it finishes without a problem, the window closes; no summary opens.
Copy to disk only The window stays open; the result and Open destination button appear below.
Stopped task No summary appears.

Result of copying to disk

The result row may say: “N files copied · N files couldn’t be copied · N files not found · N clips added to the library”.

  • Hover over the result row to see why some files couldn’t be copied. Up to 12 rows appear; the rest are shown as “… +N”. Possible reasons include “a different file with the same name is already on the destination”, “the size didn’t match the phone”, and “shortcut (symlink), not copied”.
  • If the files were copied to disk but couldn’t be added to the library, it says: “The files are on the disk but couldn’t be added to your library. Import the destination folder.”

Use Open destination to open the folder with the copied files in Finder. If it reports failed or missing files, check the details; don’t assume the whole selection finished.

Import summary

In the Import complete window, the words “clips added to your library” appear below the large number.

  • Click the ˅ button in the Skipped files row to see this breakdown:
    • Camera previews (.lrv, .thm)
    • Already in your library
    • Unsupported formats (extension and count)
    • Unreadable files: Merceq couldn’t open them (no permission or the disk responded too slowly). They’ll be retried the next time you import.
    • Files in iCloud
  • The Changed on disk, refreshed row and the note “Sense is analysing the clips in the background” may also appear.
  • The What’s left at the source? button appears only if you selected more files than the number of clips added.
  • Close the summary with Enter, Esc, or Close.

What’s left at the source?

This window shows how many files were at the source but weren’t added to the library, grouped by type: Camera preview, Camera metadata, Photo, RAW photo, Video not in your library, and Unrecognized file. Each type shows its size and sample filenames.

  • Scanning stops after 20,000 files. Then it says “Scan didn’t finish — some folders couldn’t be read or were too large. The list may be incomplete.”
  • This window doesn’t delete anything. Close it with OK.

Earlier decisions

If Recall is on and Merceq recognizes footage you made decisions about before, it shows this message: “You’ve seen N of these clips before.” Below it is a breakdown: “You rejected N · N were on hold · You kept N”.

  1. Check the records.
  2. Click Apply earlier decisions.
  3. It says, “Your earlier decision was applied to N clips. Press ⌘Z to undo.” If it was wrong, undo with ⌘Z.

Notifications

When import finishes, one of these appears in notifications:

  • “N new clips were added to your library.”
  • “There are no new clips to add.”
  • “Import stopped. N clips were added; the remaining files are still in place.”
  • “Import was interrupted. N clips were added. You can import the rest again.”
