Navigate the video from the transcript

When Sense converts speech to text, you can see the lines in the video along with their timestamps. Instead of listening through a long video, go straight to the line you’re looking for in the transcript.

  1. Click the Speech button at the bottom of the panel. The Speech section opens; its heading shows the number of lines, for example, 42 lines. There’s no separate keyboard shortcut to open this section.
  2. Click the line you’re interested in. The video goes to the moment that line starts, and the section closes.
  3. While playing, follow which line in the transcript you’re on.
  4. If you scroll through the list yourself or start editing a line, tracking stops. Use Follow playback to follow playback again.

The transcript may not be ready for every clip. Sense must be on and any required download must be complete to prepare the transcript. You can also check the spoken language settings in Settings → Sense.

You may see one of these messages in this section:

  • “No speech was found in this clip. Search can find it from its image, on-screen text, and filename.”
  • “This clip hasn’t been analysed for speech yet. The lines will appear here once it is.”

Words Sense isn’t sure about

Words Sense is less than 50% sure about appear gray. Hover over one to see “This word may be misheard (%n sure) — click to listen”. Click the word to listen to that moment and correct the line if needed. Pay special attention to names and hard-to-understand lines.

Show subtitles

If you turn on Settings → Playback → Show subtitles, the transcript appears as subtitles below the video. Below the option it says “Speech recognition can make mistakes.” It’s off by default.

  • Subtitles appear while the video is playing and change with the line being spoken at that moment. They disappear when the line ends; there’s no text during pauses between lines.
  • When you move along the timeline, the line for that moment appears.
  • Subtitles work in both the large preview and Lens view. They’re also visible in full screen (Z) and focus view (H), at the bottom of the video. They resize with the video but stay small enough not to cover the image. Up to two lines appear.
  • A line appears when the speech actually starts. A line after a long pause appears when the pause ends, not before. Clicking a line in the Speech section also takes you to that moment; timestamps in the SRT file are the same.
  • A line you corrected manually appears corrected in the subtitles.
  • No subtitles appear for clips whose transcript isn’t ready or where no speech was found.
  • The setting takes effect right away when you turn it on or off; you don’t need to reopen the video.
